"Kindness to Animals" Student Art Contest

Awards: Best Artwork Middle School (grades 6th - 8th): Four passes to Knott's Berry Farm.  Best Artwork Elementary School (grades 4th - 5th): Four passes to Knott's Berry Farm

Eligibility: 1) Open to students in grades 4th - 8th who attend school in the Greater Coachella Valley, including any of the following cities: Bermuda Dunes, Cathedral City, Coachella, Desert Hot Springs, Desert Shores, Indian Wells, Indio, La Quinta, Mecca, Oasis, Palm Desert, Palm Springs, Rancho Mirage, Thermal, Thousand Palms. 2) Artwork must be solely the student's work. Collaborations will be disqualified. 3) Students may enter only one painting OR one drawing; limit one entry per student.

Theme: Students must create artwork around the theme "Kindness to Animals."  This could express the ways people should be kind to animals, the way animals are kind to people, the kindness of animals to other animals, the importance of kindness to animals, or what it mean to be kind to animals in your opinion. 

Materials: Artwork is limited to paints and brushes or other painting tools (paintings) or pens and pencils (drawings) on canvass, poster boards, and/or paper products. No collages, clay, or sculpture work--nothing but paintings or drawings. Smallest size 8-1/2 x 11 (standard paper size); Largest size: 20 x 30.

Contest Deadline: Saturday, November 29, 2014 at 4:30pm.  For more information call 760.601.3761  Winners will be announced on stage at Walk for the Animals between 11am and 12pm.

AnSams Pet Foster Class

Time: 3:30pm - 4:30 pm

Place: Animal Samaritans' no-kill animal shelter, 72-307 Ramon Road, Thousand Palms, CA 92276

About: Learn how to help save the lives of adoptable dogs, cats, kittens and puppies by fostering an animal who needs your help.This orientation class is free and open to animal lovers who have the time and space in their homes to foster an animal. We will cover the basics for fostering a pet through Animal Samaritans and answer your questions.

14th annual Walk for the Animals

Time: 9am registration; 10am - 1pm event

Place: Palm Desert Civic Park, 73-510 Fred Waring Drive

About: Enjoy a Desert tradition!  The event includes a one mile dog walk around the park, pet vaccinations and microchipping, blessing of the animals, police K-9 demonstration, dog and puppy adoptions, pet costume contests, Frisbee dogs, raffle drawings, agility dogs, pet vendors, a kid’s fun booth, food and drink, and results from the “Kindness to Animals” student art contest.  The event proceeds benefit Animal Samaritans’ no-kill animal shelter and Humane Education program. All dogs must be on a leash or in a carrier.

Cost: Free and open to all.  Donations requested. Fundraising walk teams encouraged. To start or join a walk team visit

December Yappy Hour

 4pm - 6pm

Place: Rancho Las Palmas Resort, 41-000 Bob Hope Drive, Rancho Mirage (Across from The River Mall).

About: Enjoy one of the Desert's most popular patio venues!  Bring your dog on a leash and mingle with fellow dog owners.  Enjoy discount appetizers from The BluEmber Restaurant, bundt cakes from Nothing Bundt Cakes and pet games. Cost is $10 and includes two free drinks.  Half off all fees go to Animal Samaritans.

Paws 'N Claus

Time: 10am - 12pm

Place: The Gardens on El Paseo (in front of Saks 5th Avenue on the grass) 73545 El Paseo, Palm Desert

About: Bring the family and the family dog!  Santa will be at The Gardens on El Paseo to sit with your pooch for a holiday pet photo!  Great fun and a great holiday photo to sent to family and friends, and post on your Facebook and Instagram accounts.

Cost: $10 for a pet photo with Santa.  Animal Samaritans will receive 100% of the day's proceeds!
