Local Resort Becomes a Hot Spot for Pet Adoptions

Thousand Palms, CA – August, 10 2015:  The Westin Mission Hills Golf Resort & Spa is a Coachella Valley resort and hotel where picturesque mountain views and a tranquil location in    Rancho Mirage create the perfect refuge for vacationers…and homeless shelter dogs.  That’s right!  The luxury resort and spa and Animal Samaritans, the Desert’s most-comprehensive animal welfare organization, have teamed up to adopt out shelter dogs from the comfort of the resort’s main lobby.

The resort’s General Manager, Randy Zupanski, contacted Animal Samaritans in late March with a novel idea to help the organization find forever homes for their small to medium-sized shelter dogs.

“As a destination for families as well as a pet-friendly hotel, our resort supports joyful family experiences,” states Zupanski. “For many people, pets are part of the family and adopting a pet is a joyful family event. Even guests who are not looking to adopt are supportive of our efforts to find homes for these beautiful, adoptable dogs.”

Since officially partnering with Animal Samaritans in May, The Westin has helped find permanent homes for 8 shelter dogs; that’s nearly a dog a week.  Westin staff members, who call themselves The Westin Dog Samaritans, answer basic questions about the adoptable pet, assist interested pet owners in filling out an adoption application, and send the information to Animal Samaritans.

Animal Samaritans reviews each application, and performs routine back ground checks as needed, and conducts an initial phone interview before meeting with the adopters in person to release the next Westin foster dog to its new owner.

“Pet foster parents are critical to the success of both our Animal Rescue and Pet Adoptions programs,” notes Animal Samaritans’ Chief Operating Officer Tom Snyder. “The Westin’s caring staff are truly helping us improve the lives of animals and people. We couldn’t be happier with our partnership.”

While most of the dogs are seen by hotel guests, local residents are encouraged to stop by the Westin Mission Hills Resort and Spa at 71333 Dinah Shore Drive in Rancho Mirage, Monday through Sunday from 8am to 8pm and visit their current foster dog. Look for the large animal pen with the Astroturf floor, doggy bed, and scattering of toys.  If you don’t see a dog, he’s either being walked or on his way to a new forever home. Following a recent adoption, the next shelter dog will arrive at the Westin on Monday, August 17.
