Our Foster Program

Animal Samaritans frequently receives calls regarding animals in need of immediate care. Most are kittens and puppies unable to survive on their own needing to be bottle fed, around the clock care. In comes our foster program! Our foster heroes care for their animals until ready for adoption. All medical care, vaccinations, microchip, and spay/neuter is provided by Animal Samaritans. Please consider donating to our Foster Program and help save lives!

Become a Foster

Fostering is a rewarding and hands-on way to help us rescue an animal in need. As a foster, you’ll provide a safe and loving home for a pup or kitten until they find their forever home.

When you foster, you help save two lives: the pet you take home & the pet entering that open kennel. It’s one of the most impactful & rewarding ways to get involved. The benefits of fostering are endless, but according to our current fosters, the best part is knowing that you played a crucial role in saving a life!

FAQs

How long is the foster commitment?

You may have your Foster for anywhere from 2 weeks to 2 months. Going on vacation? No problem; just let us know!

What supplies do you provide?

All supplies are provided, meaning it’s 100% free.

Animal Samaritans will provide you with the following supplies: Crate or kennel, dog bed, blankets, or towels for a comfortable place to sleep. Food and treats, bowls, chew toys, appropriate to the size and age of your puppy or kitten. Remember, our foster care team will guide you through any questions and share appropriate resources you might need.

Can I adopt my foster pet?

We love when our fosters find a match with their foster pet. We require fosters to fill out an adoption application and go through the formal process.

What is my responsibility?

We ask that foster volunteers follow all feeding and medicating guidelines provided by our foster care team, alert foster care staff of any medical concerns, and attend scheduled appointments. Most foster animals need to come back to an appointment for vaccine and deworming. These appointments will be scheduled in advance with our foster care team.

Who needs a foster home?

Kittens are young and delicate and are best suited to grow in a healthy and loving home until they reach an ideal age 2 months and over 2 pounds for adoption. Foster kittens can range in age and needs– from new-born, bottle babies. Some foster homes take one or two kittens, other homes take a mother cat and her litter.

Who doesn’t love puppy time? When puppies arrive at our foster care program. Most of our puppies are new-born, bottle babies or quite not ready for adoption. Some foster homes take a mother dog and her litter. Fosters provide puppies with socialization, and healthy environment for them to grow.

There are several other reasons to foster:

  • Pregnant and nursing moms and their unweaned babies need a quiet place to grow.

  • Young animals that are too young for adoption or surgery are at risk of illness in a shelter and need to gain weight in a place with fewer animals.

  • Our kennels always fill up during the height of Kitten Season and Puppy Season, and many of our staff are also fosters. We couldn’t give these tiny, vulnerable beans the time and love they need without our Foster Team!
