Tips to Pet-Proof Your Home

  • Use childproof latches to keep paws from prying open cabinet doors

  • Keep candles out of reach of pets. Including areas where cats and kittens can jump and possibly knock them over creating a fire hazard

  • Keep trash cans covered

  • Check for and block any small spaces, nooks or holes behind washer/dryer units, inside cabinets, etc to keep you pet for getting stuck in area

  • Keep toilet lids closed to keep you pet from drinking water that could contain harmful cleaning chemicals

  • Keep human food out of reach of pets. Harmful/toxic foods include:

    Chocolate (especially dark chocolate)

    Grapes and raisins

    Onions and garlic

    Avacados (the seed can choke them, flesh can cause pancreatitis)

    Macadamia nuts

    Caffeine products

    Alcohol

    Marijuana products

    Xylitol products (Xylitol is found in some peanut butters, puddings, Jello, ice cream, yogurts, cookies, cake mixes, pie fillings, candies, toothpaste)

    Poultry bones (can leave shards in their stomachs and intestines)

  • Keep pets electrical wires so they do not chew them

  • Keep childrenโ€™s toys away from pets. Small toys, such as marbles and legos can be a choking hazard for pets

  • Keep poisonous plants out of pets reach. Harmful/toxic plants for dogs and cats include:

    Sago Palm

    Lilies

    Poinsettia

    Oleander

    Daffodil

    Azalea

    Tulip

    Cyclamen

    Chrysanthemum

    Castor Beans

    Philodendron

    Ivy

    Begonia

    Yew

  • Keep cleaning products and all harmful chemicals out of pets reach

  • Keep sharp objects and tools out of pets reach

  • Keep laundry and shoes out of your pets reach. Drawstrings, laces, and buttons can cause major problems if swallowed

  • Keep all medications out of pets reach
